Join the Count Basie Center for the Arts and students of the Count Basie Center Academy for their annual celebration of Dia de los Muertos at The Vogel! If you’re not sure what Dia de los Muertos is, it’s Spanish for Day of the Dead, and it’s a holiday that reunites the living and dead. Families create Ofrendas (a.k.a. Offerings) to honor their departed family members that have passed. Altars are decorated with bright yellow marigold flowers, photos of the departed, and the favorite foods and drinks of those who are being honored.
This year’s event includes performances, crafts, a face painter for the kids, and of course food to celebrate the holiday. It is a free event and open to the public. As in past celebrations, patrons are invited to contribute to the Basie’s Community Ofrenda. The Ofrenda will be open for contributions on Monday October 30, Tuesday October 31 and Wednesday November 1 from 4-6PM, and will remain on display throughout the celebration.
